Chapter 12

We found Hannah sitting on the back porch. I tried to be worried when she didn’t laugh or joke as we approached.

“What’s wrong?” I sat next to her. Maggie sat on the other side.

“I see Chance found you,” Hannah said.

“Aunt Hannah, what’s happened? And don’t tell me everything is all right. I know you.”

“I-I got a phone call about ten minutes ago. I was lying on the couch, reading. Chance was lying on my feet. She’s such a good dog…”

“Hannah…” I didn’t want to be an alarmist, but I had no patience, which was no surprise to these women. Especially when I knew something had happened. And by the worried look on Hannah’s face, something was wrong.

“I got a phone call. Some man, asking me about the desk.”

“What did he say?”

“He asked me if I wanted to sell it. I told him I did not. I explained it was a wedding gift. He pressed me again and asked who was getting married. Of course, I didn’t tell him. He said he wanted that desk, and no price would be too high. He was very insistent, and he scared me.”

“Why?” I reached over and held her hand.

“He said he would do what he had to do to get the desk.”

Maggie caressed Hannah’s forearm.

“Was there anything about his voice? You know, an accent or something about his speech?”

“He sounded young,” Hannah said. “I know that doesn’t make sense. But while he was talking, I got a picture of a young man. He sounded threatening without the actual threat. Do you know what I mean?”

“Yes, I do.”

“How did he get your number?” Maggie asked.

“I’m sure Allison has it. She needed it to schedule with the delivery company.” Hannah sat back. She no longer looked worried and pale.

“Was it on your cell or your landline?” I asked.

“I don’t have a landline, only my cell.”

Hannah handed me her cell, which I pushed toward Maggie. When she looked up the calls, she looked up at me.

“What?”

“Aunt Hannah, you have one missed call. And Maureen sent the file.”

“I do? I must have been sleeping and didn’t hear it.”

“The area code is 515.” Maggie sat back and did that text thing everyone does but me.

“What are you doing?” I leaned forward.

“I’m finding out what area code this is.”

“You can do that on a phone?”

Maggie looked up. “Yes. Just go online and—”

I held up my hand. “Never mind, sweetie. That’s fine. Just, just do your thing.” I glanced at Hannah, who had one eyebrow arched. “What?”

“You don’t know how to access the Internet from your phone?”

“She doesn’t know how to use her phone,” Maggie said absently, concentrating on the phone. “Or where it is.”

I couldn’t argue with the truth; I hated when that happened. “I don’t like technology.”

“It’s a phone,” Hannah said. “A five-year-old knows how to make a call.”

“Oh, yeah? Well, can a five-year-old—?”

“Yes, they probably can.” Hannah patted my hand. “Don’t take it to heart, dear. Now what did you find, Margaret?”

“Area code of the missed call is 515 that’s Des Moines, Iowa.
